Common Substances Included in Pre-Employment Drug Tests

Drug testing is a common step many employers take during the hiring process to protect workplace safety and ensure a productive team. While the exact drugs tested for can vary depending on the employer, most companies rely on standard drug panels that screen for five commonly abused drugs.

    Table of Contents

    Toggle
    • Marijuana (THC)
    • Cocaine
    • Opiates
    • Amphetamines and Methamphetamines
    • Phencyclidine (PCP)
    • Expanded Drug Panels for Additional Substances

    Marijuana (THC)

Marijuana is one of the most commonly tested substances in pre-employment drug screens. The substance that drug tests are actually looking for is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis that can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time.

Even though marijuana laws have changed in many states, employers can still include it in drug testing panels, particularly in safety-sensitive industries. However, testing policies for marijuana are shaped by both state and local regulations, which may restrict when and how employers can test. Always review the laws in your own state and locality before testing for marijuana or making employment decisions based on the results.

    Cocaine

Cocaine is another substance frequently included in standard drug testing panels. Cocaine is a powerful stimulant and can significantly impact a person’s behavior, cause mood swings, negatively affect decision-making, and lessen the ability to perform tasks safely. Its use can increase the risk of workplace accidents and poor performance, both of which can negatively impact your business.

    Opiates

Opiates are also typically part of pre-employment drug screens. This includes a variety of different substances, including heroin, morphine, codeine, and even semi-synthetic opioids like oxycodone. . Because these drugs can cause drowsiness, slowed reaction times, vision problems and impaired thinking, they pose serious safety risks in many workplaces.

Drug tests are designed to detect both illicit opiate use and, in some cases, the misuse of prescription medications. When prescription medications are involved, a medical review officer (MRO) usually needs to verify if the drug was taken under legitimate medical supervision.

    Amphetamines and Methamphetamines

Amphetamines and methamphetamines can significantly affect mood and cognitive function. These drugs are commonly abused for their energizing effects, but they can also lead to agitation, aggression, and impaired judgment. Standard drug panels typically test for both amphetamine and methamphetamine use.

    Phencyclidine (PCP)

Phencyclidine, often referred to as PCP, is another substance frequently included in basic drug testing panels. PCP can cause hallucinations and unpredictable behavior, making it particularly dangerous in workplace environments. Although PCP use is less common than some other drugs, it remains part of standard testing panels because of the severe behavioral and safety concerns that come from its use.

Expanded Drug Panels for Additional Substances

While many employers rely on the standard five-panel drug test that screens for the substances listed above, expanded drug testing panels are also available. These allow employers to test for additional drugs like benzodiazepines, barbiturates, synthetic opioids, and other prescription medications that may be misused. If you need a more in-depth pre-employment drug test for your business, be sure to work with a professional who can provide the type of testing you’re looking for.
