Rust on PC has just received a pretty substantial update, Bags to Riches, that brings in plenty of new stuff to the game. As surprising as it sounds, yes, backpacks are only just added to the game after 10 years of its initial release.

But besides the new backpacks, there’s a lot more in store for players that’ll greatly enhance the way you circumnavigate the wastelands. Today, we’re diving deep into everything the Bags to Riches update has to offer!

Two New Backpacks

To counteract the increasingly scarce inventory space with all the new stuff added to Rust over the last ten years, developers Facepunch have finally added backpacks to the game.

There are two new backpacks and there are some major differences between the two –

Small Backpack

The small backpack is a handmade, craftable item that will give you 12 more inventory slots. It features an apocalyptic-style bag that was put together with canvas and rope so it’s not the snazziest thing around.

The small backpack can be crafted at a T1 workbench and requires 50 cloth and 5 sewing kits.

And if you wondering how to unlock the recipe, the good news is it’s a default blueprint and is available for all players.

Large Backpack

But if you’re trying to live out a true military-style fantasy in the wastelands, the Large Backpack is your best bet. Featuring a military-grade, tactical design, it’s a fantastic-looking backpack and gives players 28 additional inventory slots.

However, this bag cannot be crafted and can only be scavenged from military loot. It’s best to keep this one safe in case you find it somewhere in the wastelands.

Backpacks are given their own equippable slot and a storage space separate from your usual inventory. But keep in mind backpacks are dropped when you die and can be looted on the ground or from your inventory.

If the backpack is filled with valuable items, it will last for 2 hours before despawning.

Update Player Remains Visuals

Player remains after death now have updated visuals to be in line with the new backpacks. The player remains can now show as opened or closed to indicate if someone’s already looted the bag, and if there are more than 3 items in the bag, it will show stuff falling out of an open bag.

Metal Detectors

In addition to backpacks, there’s also a new metal detector that can help players scavenge and look for metal objects and treasure. As you get close to an object, the light will turn yellow and will place a flag. Dig up the object with a melee weapon to receive it!

Another important thing to note is that different areas in the wasteland will house different types of loot. So experiment around different fields and terrain to find the jackpot!
