    Understanding Compressors and their Working Principle

    A compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. Compressors are used in a wide range of industries including oil and gas, construction, automotive, manufacturing, and more. They play a vital role in applications such as refrigeration, air conditioning, car breaks, vehicle suspension etc. Understanding the working principle and types of compressors is essential for their efficient use and maintenance.

    Working Principle of Compressors

    All compressors work on the basic principle of compressing a gas or vapor either by increasing the pressure or reducing the volume so that more gas molecules can be stuffed in the given space. The three main steps involved in the working of a compressor are:

    1. Induction: In this step, the low-pressure gas is drawn into the compressor through the inlet valve.
    2. Compression: The compressor reduces the volume of the gas by mechanical means like crankshaft or turbine, thereby increasing the pressure.
    3. Discharge: The high-pressure gas is expelled out through the outlet valve. This high-pressure gas is then used for various applications.

    During the compression process, the temperature of the gas increases significantly. Hence, compressors also include aftercoolers to bring down the gas temperature before discharging. Let’s now understand the different types of compressors.

    Types of Compressors

    Positive Displacement Compressors

    In positive displacement compressors, the gas is trapped in a confined space whose volume is reduced to increase the pressure. The main positive displacement compressor types are:

    – Reciprocating Compressors: Piston-cylinder arrangement reduces the volume to compress the gas in a reciprocating motion. Commonly used for low to medium pressures.

    – Rotary Screw Compressors: twin helical rotors meshing together decreases the volume between rotors’ lobes to compress the gas. Ideal for medium to high pressures and continuous operation.

    – Rotary Vane Compressors: vanes fitted into a rotor slot compresses the gas as the rotor rotates inside a hollow casing. Used where pressure up to 0.5 MPa is required.

    Centrifugal Compressors

    In centrifugal compressors, the gas continuously flows through a spinning impeller with increasing velocity and dynamic pressure. The main components include an impeller, diffuser, and volute casing. They are capable of delivering very high-pressure ratios in a single stage and preferred for high-volume low-pressure ratio applications.

    Applications of Compressors

    Based on the working principle and characteristics, different compressor types are used in various industries:

    – Refrigeration and Air Conditioning: Reciprocating and screw compressors compress refrigerants like R134a and R410a for cooling applications.

    – Manufacturing: Screw and centrifugal compressors supply compressed air for processes, tools in automotive, machinery manufacturing plants.

    – Gas Transmission and Storage: Large centrifugal and reciprocating compressors maintain high transmission pressures in natural gas pipelines and LNG facilities.

    – Automotive: Screw type compressors pressurize air for car brakes while reciprocating compressors provide compressed air for vehicle suspension systems.

    – Medical: Rotary vane and diaphragm compressors deliver breathing air and oxygen at hospitals.

    – Energy: Centrifugal compressors boost pressures in Compressor Oiland gas production, transportation pipelines.

    – Aviation: Jet aircrafts use bleed air from gas turbine engines that acts as a compressor to start auxiliary power units.

Rising industrialization and infrastructure development activities across China, India are primary factors driving the growth. North America and Europe are other major regional markets supported by recovering manufacturing sectors. Key players are focusing on developing innovative and energy-efficient compressor technologies to cater to growing applications in various end-use industries.
