What Semi-Truck Drivers Should Know when Hauling in Texas

    OliviaBy OliviaAugust 4, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Semi-trucks are common on the long highways that crisscross the Lone Star State. But Texas presents long-haul truck drivers with several unique challenges and driving conditions, so if you’ve never driven through the state yourself, it’s important to know what you should plan for. As the second-largest state in the US, Texas roads often run for hundreds of miles between major cities. The weather can change at the drop of a 10-gallon hat. And you’ll likely face a mix of urban congestion and rural highways. Understanding these factors can help you better plan your trip and ensure that you have the right rig for the job.

    Get Ready for Long Distances

Yes, long-haul driving involves long distances, but much of Texas is a very different kind of long haul. It’s important to keep in mind the sheer size of this state. A single trip across it can take an entire day or more depending on traffic, weather, routes, and your delivery schedule. You can also encounter stretches of road that go for hundreds of miles without any notable cities. You need to carefully plan out your fuel stops, rest breaks, and overnight parking before you start your route.

If you’re buying a truck for these hauls, look for something with a larger fuel tank and higher fuel economy to ensure you can make it through those long stretches. A comfortable sleeper cab is also more valuable when you’re likely to spend multiple nights on the road.

    Expect Big Weather Changes

Texas weather can change dramatically from one region to the next. You might encounter high winds across West Texas, heavy rain along the Gulf Coast, severe thunderstorms in the spring, and even icy roads during winter in the northern parts of the state. When shopping for a semi-truck, look for features like advanced stability control, dependable traction, and of course, reliable air conditioning. Texas’s long, hot summers frequently feature temperatures in the triple digits, so the last thing you want is for your AC to fail you along a stretch of hot Texas highway.

Prepare for Urban and Rural Roads

While Texas has some long and desolate rural highways with few gas stations and rest stops along the way, they also have some of the country’s busiest metropolitan areas. Cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio will leave you in heavy traffic, ongoing construction, and the dreaded rush hour, squeezing your delivery schedules. It’s important to plan your route to avoid the metropolitan areas during times of high congestion if you can.

Additionally, when looking at semi-trucks for sale in Houston, try to find rigs that can handle both the long hauls on empty roads and the stop-and-go traffic in the city. This will ensure that you’re prepared for all that the Texas roads can throw at you.
